Navigating Grief and Finding Wellness

sad woman looking out window

The holiday season, with its glittering lights and festive cheer, can bring a mix of emotions, especially for those navigating the complex terrain of grief. As a 39 year old widow, yoga teacher, wellness coach, and mom of 2 little dudes, I understand firsthand the challenges that arise during that time of year. That's why I haven't shared on here in a while. I needed to take some space and go inward.

It was hard not to notice my late husband's absence as we went through our second Christmas without him. I had to give myself a fighting chance of getting through the holidays and make it a great one for the kids while navigating the grief that tends to arise when the holidays are near.

In this blog post, I want to share some insights and strategies for navigating grief, whether it's over a holiday or special day that was dear to you and them, drawing from personal experience and the wisdom I've gained on my wellness journey.

Going Inward and Taking Time Alone: Holidays and birthdays can be overwhelming, especially when you're dealing with the weight of grief. It's okay to step back and go inward. Taking time alone to process, feel, and sit with your emotions is a crucial part of healing. Create a sacred space for yourself, whether it's a cozy corner at home or a quiet spot in nature, where you can reflect and find solace.

Spending Time with Loved Ones: While solitude is essential, so is connection. Surround yourself with the people who are closest to you and who understand the depth of your emotions. Share your thoughts and memories, allowing the support of loved ones to provide comfort and companionship during this challenging time.

Preserving Joyful Practices: Amidst the emotional waves, don't let go of the things that bring you happiness. Engage in activities that nourish your soul, whether it's practicing yoga, taking a mindful walk, or indulging in a favorite hobby. These practices become anchors, grounding you in moments of joy and helping you navigate the ebb and flow of emotions.

Prioritizing Basic Wellness: Grief can take a toll on your overall well-being, so it becomes even more crucial to prioritize the basics. Ensure you're getting enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise. These fundamental pillars of wellness provide a stable foundation during turbulent times.

Giving Yourself Grace and Time: Grieving is a unique journey for each individual, and there's no timeline for healing. Give yourself grace and time to process everything. It's okay not to have everything figured out and to acknowledge that healing is a gradual process.

Remembering and Honoring: Take intentional time to remember your loved one. Look at pictures, watch videos, and cherish personal items that hold sentimental value. Creating a space for remembrance allows you to celebrate the positive impact your loved one had on your life.

As we navigate the path of grief, it's essential to approach it with both compassion and self-care. The journey is personal, and finding wellness amidst the waves of emotions requires a delicate balance. Through going inward, spending time with loved ones, preserving joyful practices, prioritizing basic wellness, giving ourselves grace, and remembering and honoring our loved ones, we can find strength and resilience.
